Jeep and Offroad Common Terms

Aftermarket

A Jeep that has had factory-installed parts and accessories replaced with non-manufacturer substitutes. Aftermarket parts include lift kits, special headlights, Jeep soft tops, etc.

Armor

This term is short for body armor, referring to sliders, heavy-duty bumpers, and any other protective addition to your Jeep’s body.

Articulation

Articulation refers to the flexibility of your Jeep’s suspension, specifically the up-and-down travel of one wheel in relation to the other on the opposite side of the axle. Articulation is key for off-roading, as it allows for maximum ground contact and, thus, maximum traction, even over the most challenging obstacles.

Bog, Bogging and Bogger

‘Bogging’ or ‘to bog’ have different meanings but both commonly referred to when an engine driven in too high of a gear for the speed or load of the vehicle. These terms can also refer to a pit of wet dirt called a mud-bog. This is a place where boggers enjoy getting down-and-dirty; this type of activity often called ‘bogging.’

Built

A Jeep professionally changed and upfitted with high-performance aftermarket parts.

Death Wobble

A dangerous oscillation of the front axle and the steering components. The strong vibrations often cause the steering wheel to shake from side to side. Caused by suspension kits and other aftermarket parts not installed properly.

Driver

Term used by spotters telling the driver which way to turn or go. Which means toward the driver side of the vehicle.

Droop

How far the wheels reach below a Jeep (downward articulation).

Ducking

Ducking is a recent trend in the Jeep community, originally started by Jeeper Allison Parliament (Ontario) placing a rubber duck on a fellow Jeep driver’s vehicle. She randomly placed a yellow duck on a Jeep parked next to her Jeep. Jeep owners now collect and share rubber ducks with one another to show kindness and solidarity. People are now attaching a kind note, compliment, or the hashtags #jeepducking or #duckduckjeep to the duck.

Gapper

Insulting nickname given to spectators on the sidelines whose mouths are gapping i.e., wide-open during maneuvers made by four-wheelers in action.

Gnarly

Term used in the same way surfers boast about their ride, the same is true for four-wheelers. Gnarly could have a positive or negative connotation depending upon the circumstances. Whether the route was overly challenging leading to driver exhilaration, particularly painful or caused damage to the vehicle, this adjective is a go-to descriptor.

Granny Gear

The lowest, slowest gear available. Meant to convey that only a grandma would potentially pass a traveler trekking at this tortoise-like pace.

Heavy Pedal

Term referring to the gas pedal.

Jeep

4×4 vehicle brand or an acronym for “Just Empty Every Pocket.”

Jeep Wave

The Jeep Wave is a common phenomenon among Jeep owners and enthusiasts alike; it is a sign of endearment consisting of a simple wave as you pass by another Jeeper on the road. There is only one rule: if someone waves, wave back!

Jeepers/Jeephers

A term used to identify an individual who owns and drives Jeeps.

Line

This term refers to the path taken up an obstacle, often the best path for the most successful approach or departure.

Lockers

“Locker” or “lockers” is slang for locking differentials, a common addition to dedicated off-roading Jeeps to increase traction. Lockers tie your Jeep’s axle shafts together, ensuring you are constantly putting power to the ground.

Mod

This term is short for “modification,” referring to any change to your Jeep, whether that be aftermarket parts, decals, paintwork, or anything else that changes its factory appearance.

Mudding

Refers to taking your Jeep through thick, deep mud.

OEM

Stands for the original equipment from the manufacturer. When a Jeep is OEM, it means it is in “stock condition” as opposed to having custom items added on after bought whether new or used.

Overlanding

Self-sustained travel dependent on an offroad vehicle over off-road terrain, with the goal of experiencing nature and enjoying the journey.

Jeep:

Paperweight

A damaged piece or part beyond repair and considered completely useless.

Passenger

Term used by spotters telling the driver which way to turn or go. Which means toward the passenger side of the vehicle.

Rig

Refers to any Jeep or off-road vehicle built to the gills, typically featuring a lift kit, aftermarket bumpers, off-road lights, aftermarket wheels and tires, and various other accessories that set it apart from daily drivers.

Rims

This is a slang term for wheels, often used to describe something stylish and flashy.

Rockcrawler

A general term used to describe vehicles specifically designed to conquer rocky terrain.

Sano or Sanitary

The Urban Dictionary defines Sano as something being sanitary and for Jeep owners, it is meant to convey a ride that is superior in comparison to others. Used as a title for a vehicle that is well-designed, better-engineered, cleanly-built and constructed.

Send It

Term meaning to go or proceed.

Skinny Pedal

Term referring to the gas pedal.

Spotter

A spotter is your second set of eyes, typically positioned outside of your Jeep on a challenging obstacle. This individual will guide you through challenging trail sections with directions and tips, ensuring a successful approach or departure

Stacking

Jeep Stacking is an odd phenomenon among Jeepers, typically “rigs.” These heavily modified Jeeps “stack” on one another’s tires, effectively using another Jeep as an RTI ramp. No one knows where it started, but it sure makes for an impressive photo!

Stealership

A derogatory term given to car dealerships where DIY drivers avoid buying parts there due to them being notoriously overpriced.

Stock

A slang term referring to an unmodified Jeep equipped with OEM parts; often referred to as “bone-stock.”

Stuff

How far the wheels can be pushed up into the vehicle (upward articulation)

Swamped

Refers to a Jeep fully submerged in water after misjudging a water crossing or blasting through a watery mud hole.

Trail

Off-road routes used to access remote areas or explore off-road adventures in different climates and terrain.

Trail Boss

This is the title given to the first driver on the trail when a group of Jeepers are out on an off-roading adventure. They lead the group on the trail ride or adventure and usually give the trail and safety brief to the group. Warns the group of any danger along the trail and stays in contact with tail gunner.

Tail Gunner

This is the title given to the last driver on the trail when a group of Jeepers are out on an off-roading adventure. It is the tail gunner’s job to ensure the entire gang has successfully completed the journey and keep the trail boss informed of any issues or problems.

Tire Bead

The part of the tire that creates an air-tight seal around the rim of the wheel. It keeps the tire and the wheel moving together.

Tree-Saver

Environmentally minded tree-huggers will use a ‘tree-saver’ tool to protect the plant and winch cable from damage. By wrapping this nylon strap around a tree as an anchor point while winching, both the cable and protects the tree from damage and a potentially premature death.

Yard Sale

This is a term that hopefully you never use refers to a total loss, due to a rollover, collision, or submersion in water.

Wheeling

This term is a synonym for off-roading, commonly used by frequent trail goers.

Wrenching

Working on your Jeep — whether it be repairing damage, installing mods, or performing a tune-up.
